homes-for-sale-in-ocoee“The Center of Good Living” is the motto of the City of Ocoee, located in Florida’s Orange County, and the residents of the rapidly growing town are determined to keep it that way. Beautifully preserved historic buildings on picturesque brick roads, lovely lakeside parks and trails, and fast access to Florida’s Turnpike, the Western Beltway and the East/West Expressway attract families, empty-nesters and singles to an area that promises a vibrant, fulfilling lifestyle.

Ocoee has expanded substantially since its founding on Starke Lake in 1881, spreading all the way to the banks of Lake Apopka. Today, it’s home to a population of some 45,000 with both new builds and long established homes for sale. The downtown historic district marks the city’s beginnings in the 1850s when Dr. James D. Starke created a malaria-free camp for area agricultural workers on the pristine lake to which he gave his name. The camp grew into a village after the Civil War when the families of confederate soldiers settled there. A land grant on Starke Lake was made in 1883 to Captain Bluford Sims who had the area platted and named it Ocoee, an anglicized Cherokee word meaning “apricot vine place,” the plant which is now the city’s flower. Bluford Sims’s citrus nursery was the first bud wild orange trees which he supplied to other Florida groves.

Construction of the Florida State Road 50, and the access it provided to the fast-growing city of Orlando to the south, became the impetus for housing development in the 1960s. While the growth of industry and commerce in the city creates employment – engineering, automation and plastics companies are major employers along with Manheim Orlando, Health Central Hospital and Oaks Mall, maintaining the city’s reputation for good living is not forgotten.

Central Park with its Moxie Lake boardwalk, Spring Lake in Silver Glenn Park and Bill Breeze Park are all popular spots for community events, family picnics, and for simply admiring the lake views. Bill Breeze Park, Lakeshore Center and Withers-Maguire House provide the venue for the Annual Founders’ Day Festival, Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration and Food Truck Fridays Movie Night. Coventry Park is the place for organized sports and the West Orange Trail, which features 22 miles of scenic biking and jogging paths, passes Ocoee on its way to Winter Garden.

Ocoee real estate offerings range from historic to those on newly developed subdivisions. The average price is in the mid $200’s and detached houses, townhouses and condominiums are available to meet individual requirements.

Orange County Public Schools serve the area with four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, with additional public, charter and private schools in the area. Easily accessible post secondary institutions include the University of Central Florida, Everest University-South Orlando, Seminole State College and Full Sail University in Orlando, Sanford and Winter Park.

Scenic landscape, family-friendly activities and good living sum up the advantages of taking a serious look at Ocoee real estate.
